Writing

At VLA, we want all of our pupils to view writing as a pleasurable and purposeful skill. To achieve this aim, most of the teaching of writing is giving over to writing for 4 specific purposes:

  • To entertain
  • To inform
  • To persuade
  • To discuss

From EYFS, right up to year 6, pupils plan and talk about writing using a RAFT approach:

Reason
Audience
Features
Tone

Although writing for a specific audience and purpose is not a key focus of the curriculum in EYFS or KS1, learning to write for a purpose is still an important part of becoming a writer.

Writing Long Term Plan (2023-2024)

While writing for different purposes pupils will be developing core writing skills:

Transcription (Spelling and Handwriting)
Composition (audience, purpose, structure, planning, writing and editing)
Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation

See here for the progression of skills pupil will be expected to achieve in each year group.
