Class 4 (Year 4 & 5)

Welcome to Class 4 (Year 4 & 5)

  • Teacher: Mr Blake
  • Teaching Assistants: Mrs Benson, Mrs Butler

Class 4 is a jolly mixture of both Year 4 and Year 5 pupils, who are starting to become more independent and inquisitive learners as they reach the latter stages of their time at Victoria Lane Academy. Pupils in Class 4 are encouraged to question, to be creative and to find pleasure in the wonderful world of books and stories. With support from Mr Blake, Mrs Benson and Mrs Butler, pupils will  become outstanding role models for the younger pupils in school thanks to their positive learning behaviours. Our topics for this year include: Invaders and settlers, The United Kingdom, Mayans, the Americas and many more. We will be enjoying some amazing novels and stories this year, kicking off in the Autumn term with My Story: Roman Invasion, The Saga of Erik the Viking and Arthur and the Golden Rope.

PE

There will be two hour PE lessons every week as well as a daily fitness session. At times, there may well be additional sessions when external coaches are in school. Children are advised to bring in a PE kit on a Monday morning and to leave it in school for a half – term. The kit will then be returned home for cleaning. If you would prefer to wash it more regularly then please inform staff, who will send the kit home as and when requested by parents.

Please note during spring term, Class 4 children will be allocated swimming sessions on a   Friday so will require a swimming kit including a swimming hat and a towel. Boys must wear swimming trunks not swimming shorts and girls must wear a swimming costume and not a bikini. Goggles may be worn also.

Please note no jewellery is allowed to be worn during PE for safety reasons and will need to be removed during PE and sporting activities.

PE Long Term Plan

Homework

At VLA, we operate an effective and consistent whole school approach to homework. Every child, from Year 1 – Year 6 is issued with their very own VLA Homework Book. Our Homework book will also be used as a reading diary and should be brought into school every day. The homework children receive in school will vary depending on the year group they are in. The table below shows the homework children should complete.

The homework with the * should be completed at least 3 times per week. (Ideally more)

Maths homework: will be set once a week. It will either be calculations to complete in the book or a task given on a separate sheet.

Spellings: Please practise the spellings with your child as much as possible using the spelling strategies within this booklet.

Sentence and spelling task: For this section, the children need to choose 6 of their spelling words and use them accurately in sentences. When writing these sentences the children MUST apply their English skills e.g. use of a range of sentence openers and punctuation, conjunctions, effective vocabulary, etc. They should also complete the sentences in their NEATEST handwriting!

Rewards: Children are positively rewarded for regular completion of homework and will receive termly rewards. Rewards including time on a bouncy castle and ice creams will be given for reading and the completion of maths and sentence activities.

All homework books will be given out, with new homework, on a Friday and homework will be checked the following Thursday. Children are encouraged to ask for help should they encounter difficulties with any homework given.
